Red Teeth 05:06
You took the robin, You put the stone in its throat. Now every note it sings rattles, rattles. You took the orchid, You wrapped its petals in the frost. Now when it shakes it off, it rattles, it rattles. (Could you shake it off like it was nothing?) Red in the front teeth: You tried to terrify the sun, Stare down the rays of light 'til it was gone. It took every power You know I claim to possess Just to convince myself it's harmless, it's harmless. I'm considering things that I wouldn't have When I was young. I'm considering things I know shouldn't be done. I'm attracted to the dark: What moves and what sparks? I'm considering things that I wouldn't have When I had a heart. You drew my power out Like it was poison now.

Wooden Horse 03:26
It pays to stay in the wooden horse. Then comes the day you make a choice. Now I'm the only one around And when the walls come down, What business is it of yours? Hey, I don't miss you like I thought I would anymore. The sea, the sea is calling me away To the place I'll love until my grave, Where fields are full of green and winds are tame. But I have made my place Amidst the terror and the waste These days... I'm the only one around And when the walls come down, What business is it of yours? Hey, I don't miss you like I thought I would And I won't tell a lie. When you hide yourself in the hollow wood, What business is it of mine?

When I look at you, eyes are closed. I am terrified. I suppose it's Natural not to know. Terrible eyes are closing On the repast I wanted. I had to behave this way. Come on, give me what I want. When you closed the fist, Never felt like this before. Give me what I want. Never once considered what I fell for. Never once, never once, never once. I once could count on you To bring me joy, to bring me joy, To bring me out. The illness in those hills-- You kept me safe, you kept me safe, You kept it out. When you look at me, eyes are closed. I know perfectly well I chose this. On the inside of the eyelid, I live. All I believe in is night and day, Lost in the scheme of the light/shade. I once could count on you To light the lamps, to light the lamps, To fill the dark. The illness in those hills Flooded in, it flooded in and It took me out.

Shape in the darkness, I will run to you. Fall with no harness, I will run to you. Slender is the throat That pulls the dark smoke down. Troubled is the road That you'll be walking down. That you'll be walking down, my love, That you'll be walking down. Stark: the final scenery That you'll be witness to. Partner in the thievery, The gallows swing for you too. And you'll be walking down that road, You'll be walking down. I've been a lonesome traveler, I've trusted not myself. I've been a lonesome traveler lately, I've trusted not myself. Oh, I've been wrong Lately and all along.

about

"Future joys are like tropic shores"
--Gustav Flaubert

Temptations are presented, loyalties tested, honesty questioned--and nowhere is there the offer of a moral answer. There are dark depths and lonely places. Brighter moments are like blown blossoms, swirled and whorled with no mooring. And always, the specter of future happiness hovers just ahead, a carrot on a string above our mouths. Ever uncertain if it can be reached, or if it is even there at all--and so we grow.
